Julie's WLS Journey

The whole story
Jump to:  Before & After Pics | Current Stats & Pics

My weight loss surgery (WLS) journey began in earnest in January of 2003.  It was then that I began to seriously investigate the different kinds of surgeries available and deciding whether or not this was the path for me.

So now I have done the research and prepared my way.  On April 7th, 2003 I had open proximal roux-en-y gastric bypass.

  • You can read my online journal here.
  • My Obesityhelp.com profile is here.  It has some information that the journal doesn't (such as my reviews of my surgeon, hospital and insurance info, and some reviews of various weight loss products), but the journal follows my day to day thoughts more thoroughly.
  • I've begun a collection of puree-stage recipes for weight loss patients - you can find it here.

I'll be giving regular updates on this page, as well, along with photos.

Me at my heaviest.
Here in the summer of 1999 I weighed 300+
(I'd stopped weighing myself).

Here's what I pretty much looked like at the beginning of my journey.  This is from the summer of 2002.  Fat, but happy in general.  I have a good life, but it can be even better at a lower weight, without a doubt.

Here's the hubby and I on March 22, 2003, about a month before the surgery.

Below are the official before photos, taken by my friend Johanna about a week before surgery.

Here's me, 44 pounds down.  The difference doesn't really show much, yet, but all my clothing is baggy and I feel a lot better, for sure.  :)  (And none of my favorite bras fit anymore...)

I had a long stall at the end of June and beginning of July which was really frustrating.  I finally figured out (or decided, rather) what was causing it: I'd just gone on a birth control patch.  After taking the patch off, my weight loss began again.

Sorry for the shirt with spots on it! It was a bit tight and I didn't like this photo and wasn't going to post it, but since I hadn't taken others I figured I should post it after all.

Well, I'd thought that maybe putting on my swim top and different shorts would show the loss better, but I was wrong.  It's really frustrating to know that I've lost 83 pounds and yet I'm still just plain fat.  I don't look like I've lost much at all, other than the difference in my face.  I know I should be happy about the loss, but sometimes I just get frustrated with it all.  I think it'll be a while before I post any more photos.

I've in-grown all my pants, again. I'd gotten a few pairs from a support group clothing swap, but they're too big now, as well.  That's wonderful, of course, but it does make it difficult to find something to wear every day.

My friend Shirley delights in pointing out that I have a waist again.  *grin*

Just to show you the difference that clothes can make... this photo is only 5 pounds lighter than the previous.  But because the clothes fit better (and are more form fitting) there's a dramatic difference in my appearance.  :)

I haven't been losing weight very quickly recently, but I'm not too worried about it.  I know eventually it'll all come off.  I also need to exercise more.

These days the weight loss is slow but sure. While I was away on a business trip for the past two weeks is when I lost those three pounds and got under 200.  So not only have I joined The Century Club by losing 100 pounds, I've gotten under one of my personal milestones. I remember getting to 198 in around 1991 after a bunch of personal turmoil occurred in my life. I lost a lot of weight and was just on the upward swing of making things better. Unfortunately, I also gained all the weight back.

This time, though, that's simply not going to happen. My life is good - has been for quite some time - and the weight loss continues.
